Restless? Lost? Anxious? Stressed?

Do you desire change?

Only yoga provides the mind-body connection necessary to radically transform and enhance every element of your life.

In order to transform through yoga, it is necessary to learn about the core truths of a Yoga practice – to discover how to effectively, safely, and realistically incorporate yoga into your daily life. It’s not easy. It’s not something you master over night. It is, however, totally possible and tremendously life enriching. I have recently explored in The Power of Yoga all the different facets of a yoga practice that come together to create change. When these pieces fuse together, real change happens. Here are a few steps toward achieving total mind and body transformation.

1. Learn accessible meditation techniques to quiet and calm the mind.

2. Calm, cleanse and invigorate the body with breath work techniques. Practice conscious breathing throughout your day to ease stress and tension. Develop awareness of your breathing, check in with where you are, and determine a breath exercise fitting for your current state.
3. Rebound quickly from stress and anxiety with Quick Fix exercises. In my book, I feature two quick fix techniques to overcome stress in non-yoga environments: a Clench and Release technique (essentially clenching and releasing different parts of the body) and an Inner Glow exercise.
4. Contemplate your goals. Realize the physical, emotional, and psychological aches and pains that you face. Write them down. Meditate on them. Evaluate how yoga influences these mind and body states.
5. Establish a fusion method. In other words, practice a blend of yoga activities – meditation, breathing exercises, yoga poses, etc. to fully experience all that is yoga.
6. Construct a plan or a “routine” for your practice. Make yoga a habit. It could be just as simple as practicing a tuning-in exercise daily.
7. Establish mind and body balance with various grounding poses: Tree Pose, Standing Split, Triangle Pose, Standing Angle Pose, and Standing Bow Pose.
8. Energize and awaken your body with invigorating postures: Spinal Twist, Kneeling Wheel, and Child’s Pose.
9. Feel open and reverse bad posture with Cobra Pose, Locust Pose, Bow Pose, Bent Knee Pose, and Padmasana.
10. Get bendy and flexible with Plow Pose.

11. Heighten body awareness with Wind Relieving Pose and Shoulder Stands.
12. Engage body locks (bandhas) to channel and release mental and physical energy that builds up in the body to support your movements, actions, and thoughts.
13. Post yoga practice, take sometime to marinate in the effects of your practice - to realize how the experience made you feel. Don’t rush back in the “real world” swing of things. Take time to smell the roses.

Yoga goes way beyond a simple workout or physical act. Sure, it tightens and creates leaner muscles. Sure, it enhances core and bodily strength. Yoga, also, has the miraculous ability to help you overcome emotional turmoil within a few short moments of guided breathing and/or bodywork. It helps you to find yourself in all the noise and craziness that we face in our day-to-day lives.

For more on the history and practice, I have put together a valuable book, The Power of Yoga, to guide you through the ins and outs of a yoga practice. Learn a meditation technique that works for you. Experiment with breath work that is fitting for you. Perfect your seated and standing posture. Learn to activate your body locks (bandhas) to feel open and alive. Practice poses that help you accomplish your specific goals. Craft an individualized “routine,” fusing different elements of the practice. Finally, learn useful quick fix exercises to help you overcome impatience, anger, anxiety, etc.

We all desire to be the best versions of ourselves. Yoga takes us to that higher, ideal state. Discover yoga. Discover your self.
